Photo Tips & Tricks

Photo tips to get the best result from your commissioned piece

I mostly work from photographs.  In order to achieve a good likeness and capture the animal's personality,  the quality and detail of the finished portrait is reliant upon you providing  such photos from which I can ascertain features, expressions, coat color, etc.

The following are some helpful tips and tricks to capture the details needed to provide me with the outcome of the portrait you expect.

  • Turn your flash OFF. Flash photography can distort colors
  • Crouch down to your pet's eye level
  • Photograph your pet outdoors in natural sunlight and in the shade.  Too much direct sunlight causes a bleaching effect and will alter the colors of the fur.  Too little natural light and you can't see them properly, making it difficult to see details and create a true likeness.
  • Take at least 8-10 photos from different angles
  • Where possible, photos taken for a portrait are better when you get a good close-up.
  • Use treats if necessary to grab your pet's attention.  Hold the treat just above the camera or iPhone so He/She will look towards the camera
  • Tongue in or out is up to you.  Whatever captures your pet's personality best.
  • Enjoy this working session with your pet
  • If this is a memorial portrait, then any good quality photos will be used.  Keep in mind that the portrait details are VERY important.  Any blurred detail will greatly influence the outcome of the portrait.

Once you have your photos email them to MarlaKsArt@gmail.com in high resolution digital JPEG format or text them to 336-210-0110

I will contact you once I have received your photos to discuss them with you and a decision will be made at this time as to which image will be used for the portrait.
